Anderson Materials Evaluation, Inc. specializes in materials identification, verification of specifications, and fraud prevention through careful scientific analysis. Our team of Ph.D. scientists has completed numerous investigations to ensure materials meet specified standards and to detect fraud claims and substitutions. Below are some examples of how Anderson Materials Evaluation has help other clients.
Materials Identification Case Studies:
- Borosilicate Glass Analysis:
- Evaluated glass parts from China intended for outdoor use. Within months, the glass turned yellow and cracked despite specifications for UV-resistant borosilicate glass. XPS analysis revealed significant issues: lower boron concentration, higher sodium, barium, calcium, potassium, chlorine, and zinc not found in specified glass. We identified thermal expansion differences, giving an explanation to the cracking issues (through TMA).
- Diamond Simulant Examination:
- Anderson Materials Evaluation tested a gemstone from Diamond Nexus Laboratories. Diamond Nexus Laboratories claimed they coated the gem with corundum (sapphire) for improved strength and identified it as polycrystalline. XPS analysis revealed that it was yttrium-stabilized cubic zirconia without a corundum coating. This finding contradicted the company’s claims of unique product development. You can find our report here: Report Part 1 and Report Part 2.
- Fire Hazard Assessment of Building Claddings:
- Following the Grenfell Tower fire in London, we tested thermally insulated aluminum alloy claddings from various buildings. Identified fire hazards and fire-retardant materials, helping in replacement programs to enhance building safety.
